Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel celebrated four years in office on September 13, and he’s made women empowerment and maternal health top priorities in his government. This approach aligns perfectly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, as highlighted in a recent press release from the Gujarat CMO.
Under CM Patel’s leadership, Gujarat has seen huge improvements in maternal and child healthcare over the last four years. Health experts praise the progress, and a big part of it comes from the Namo Shree Yojana—a game-changing scheme that supports pregnant women and new mothers with healthcare and nutrition.
Launched in February 2024 as CM Patel’s flagship initiative, the Namo Shree Yojana has reached over 6.21 lakh women in just 18 months. These beneficiaries have received more than Rs 354 crore directly in their bank accounts. As of September 7, 2025, nearly 11 lakh women have registered, showing how much trust families in Gujarat have in this women empowerment scheme.
The scheme offers up to Rs 12,000 in financial assistance for a woman’s first two live births. It links up with central government programs like PMMVY (Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana) and JSY (Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram) to provide even better support.
Here’s how the money flows for the first pregnancy: Women get Rs 5,000 at registration (Rs 2,000 from the state and Rs 3,000 from the Centre). Then, Rs 2,000 after six months (state), Rs 3,000 right after delivery at a health facility (state), and Rs 2,000 after the baby’s 14th-week vaccination (Centre). Everything goes straight to the woman’s bank account.
For the second pregnancy, it adjusts a bit: Rs 2,000 at registration, Rs 3,000 after six months, Rs 6,000 after delivery (Centre if it’s a girl, state if it’s a boy), and Rs 1,000 after the 14th-week vaccination (state). This direct transfer boosts both nutrition for mothers and financial independence for families.
Getting access is straightforward and transparent. Pregnant women register at local health centers or through the state TeCHO+ portal, uploading their documents. Officials verify everything at the health center, taluka, and state levels using the PFMS system. Once approved, the money hits the bank via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT)—quick and hassle-free.
Gujarat’s maternal health story is inspiring. From 2013 to 2023, the state’s Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) fell by 54.5%, dropping from 112 deaths per 100,000 live births to just 51. That’s way below the national average of 88 and beats the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of under 70 by 2030—Gujarat achieved it early!
Experts say this success stems from strong teamwork between central and state efforts. Besides Namo Shree Yojana, schemes like SUMAN (Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan), PMSMA (Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan), Mamta, and Khilkhilat have stepped up to deliver timely care, nutrition, and help for moms and babies across Gujarat.
