72-year-old Texas woman hospitalized with broken pelvis, internal bleeding after violent geese attack
A 72‑year‑old woman named Lydia West was taken to a major trauma center after a flock of aggressive geese knocked her over and kept pecking her in a Texas park, officials said. While feeding ducks at City Lake Park in Royse City, West was startled when a group of geese started snapping at her food. According to her son, David West, the birds swarmed her, forcing her to the ground and chasing her as she tried to escape. An on‑site couple eventually pulled the fowl off her and called for paramedics. Doctors quickly realized the seriousness of her injuries: she suffered multiple fractures on one side of her pelvis and internal bleeding, leading to her transfer from a local hospital to a Dallas trauma center. “Several breaks on one side of her pelvis,” David explained, adding, “She also had internal bleeding.” The older woman faces a lengthy recovery, including physical therapy to regain walking ability, and has been reminded that she already had pre‑existing health issues. Lydia was understandably stunned that the geese could exhibit such territory‑driven aggression. “For her, it was a shock that the geese could even become that territorial and could hurt somebody,” David said. The incident highlights that domesticated Chinese goose breeds – often seen at the park – are notably vocal, alert, and can become “watch‑geese” when threatened. “It just sounded so out there,” David recalled of the call he first received, stating, “I’ve been getting a call in the middle of the day at work that my mother’s being transported to the hospital because geese attacked her. It was something so ironic and odd. Now, I’ve done research online and realized that, okay, it happens, but it’s just such an odd feeling, and it’s still a shock to process.”
