PM Modi calls for end to ‘slavery mindset’, stresses trust-based governance

On Saturday, New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a speech that framed his vision of governance around public trust, self‑reliance, and a decisive break from colonial‑era thinking. Speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2025, he announced that many official procedures would now accept self‑attestation, a step meant to slash red tape and give people more agency.
He linked these updates to the Jan Vishwas Bill Provisions, which also aim to decriminalise minor compliance matters so ordinary citizens aren’t burdened by excessive paperwork. Modi highlighted the impact of guarantee‑free loans, noting that Rs 37 lakh crore has already gone to small vendors, hawkers and economically weaker sections. “Even those demanding just Rs 1,000 are receiving loans without guarantees. This is governance that trusts its people,” he said, underscoring the administration’s push for financial inclusion.
Turning to unclaimed money, the Prime Minister revealed staggering figures: Rs 78 000 crore idle in banks, Rs 14 000 crore with insurance firms, Rs 3 000 crore in mutual funds and Rs 9 000 crore in dividends. He explained that the government has set up district‑level camps to help citizens recover their rightful funds, with thousands of crores already returned. “This is Modi searching for people to claim their hard‑earned money,” he remarked, stressing that restoring public faith is the government’s greatest asset.
In a personal appeal, Modi urged citizens to shed the “Macaulay’s slavery mindset” by 2035, setting a ten‑year goal to overcome colonial legacies. Folding his hands, he added, “I cannot do this without the support of the people of this country. We must not follow the footprints of others – we have to make our line bigger. Against all odds, we must march ahead.”
His address blended economic initiatives with a philosophical call for national confidence, positioning trust between government and citizens as the cornerstone of India’s future growth. The message was clear: governance must deliver development while inspiring a collective spirit to rise above inherited limits and chart an independent path forward.
