Prime Minister Narendra Modi told listeners on the 128th episode of his monthly radio show “Mann Ki Baat” that India has a great chance to become a top destination for winter travel. He urged folks to think of the Himalayas when they plan their next getaway.
“In the winter, tourism becomes a standout. Many countries have turned their winter season into a cornerstone of their economies, hosting successful festivals and sports such as skiing, snowboarding, trekking on snow, ice climbing, and family-friendly snow parks,” Modi said. “They’ve transformed these events into global attractions.”
Highlighting that India “has every potential” to develop a robust winter tourism system, he added that the country already offers mountains, culture, and endless adventure opportunities. He expressed excitement that places in Uttarakhand—like Auli, Munsyari, Chopta, and Deyara—are drawing more visitors each winter.
Modi also mentioned the state’s inaugural High‑Altitude Ultra Run Marathon, the “Adi Kailash Parikrama Run,” which took place at an elevation of more than 14,500 ft in Pithoragarh district on Nov. 2. He noted that more than 750 athletes from 18 states crossed the 60‑kilometre course, starting at 5 am amid biting cold. Despite the chill, the enthusiasm was unmistakable. While only a handful of tourists visited Adi Kailash a few years ago, the figure has since jumped to over 30,000.
He went on to say that Uttarakhand will soon host a Winter Games event, attracting athletes, adventure lovers, and sports fans from across the country. “Whether it’s skiing or snowboarding, preparations for snow‑based sports are underway. Uttarakhand has also focused on better connectivity and infrastructure to boost winter tourism. A new homestay policy has been introduced as well,” he explained.
Modi noted the rising trend of “Wed in India” weddings during the winter months. “Whether the hills are bathed in a golden winter sun or shrouded in fog, they’re becoming a popular backdrop for destination weddings. Lots of ceremonies are now taking place, especially along the Ganga,” he added.
Encouraging travelers to choose mountain settings for the season, he advised: “During these cold days, the Himalayan valleys become part of an unforgettable experience. If you’re planning a trip this winter, make sure to consider the Himalayan valleys.”
