Small plane that crashed near Denver and killed 2 had engine malfunction mid-air: NTSB

A small plane crashed near Denver in early September, killing both pilots on board after a sudden engine failure in mid-air. Preliminary findings from the National Transportation Safety Board point to the engine malfunction as the key factor in the tragic Beech BE35 accident.

The crash happened on September 5 near Centennial Airport in Englewood, Colorado. One pilot was getting hands-on training in the aircraft because he planned to buy a similar one. The two men took off around 5:45 a.m. and stuck to their traffic pattern, nailing several landings without issues. But less than an hour later, the engine cut out completely.

The plane slammed into concrete barriers near a diesel generator, bursting into flames. The impact destroyed the aircraft, and the fire quickly spread toward a nearby building by the time firefighters arrived. At first, people reported it as an explosion, likely due to the close call with the generator.

The pilots were Perry “Matt” Feeney and Lee “Rob” Hill, both locals from Colorado. Witnesses about two miles away heard the engine go quiet as the plane flew overhead. One woman living south of the airport spotted the small plane veer off its usual path, drop lower than normal, bank sharply left, and begin its fatal descent. Neither pilot made a distress call before the fiery wreck.

Air traffic control recordings from LiveATC.net capture the controller giving the all-clear for takeoff just moments earlier. The NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration are digging deeper into the Denver plane crash to uncover more details.
