Hema Malini honours late Dharmendra’s memory as a cherished grandfather; Esha Deol & Ahana Deol get emotional at prayer meet

Mumbai, Dec 11 (Reuters) – At a tribute ceremony in Delhi on Saturday, Bollywood icon Hema Malini, whose late husband Shah‑Rukh‑like superstar Dharmendra passed away last month, was visibly moved. She addressed the crowd gathered to pay their final respects and opened her remarks with a spiritual invocation, reciting the Sanskrit shloka: “Radhe Radhe Vasudeva Sutam Devam, Sansa Chanuram Ardhanam, Devaki Paramanandam, Krishnam Vande Jagadguru.”

Speaking on Dharmendra, the actress broke into tears, saying, “It’s strange to be at a prayer meeting in this way, yet it feels necessary.” She added, “While the world mourns his loss, the shock for me is unmeasurable. A partnership that stood the test of time has been abruptly taken from me.”

Hema praised her husband as “a man of limitless generosity,” noting his humility, easy‑going nature, and deep compassion. She recalled how they met on the set of a romantic film that later turned into a lifelong marriage, supported by mutual honesty and courage.

The veteran actress highlighted Dharmendra’s devotion as a spouse, acknowledging his unwavering support for her career and his affectionate role as a father to their two daughters, Esha and Ahana. She also spoke fondly of his relationship with their five grandchildren, affectionately called “Nanu,” and how he would often say, “This is our beautiful garden. Always take care of it with love and patience.”

Malini stressed that Dharmendra treated everyone, even her family members, with humility and kindness. “My mother, aunt, brothers, sister‑in‑law, and their children all loved him deeply. He was a vital part of each of our lives.”

The gathering also saw the attendance of actors like Kangana Ranaut and Ravi Kishan, as well as several politicians, all paying tribute to the legendary star. The tribute was organized by Hema, Esha Deol, and Ahana Deol, a few days after their brothers Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol hosted a similar event on Dharmendra’s birth‑anniversary the week before. Dharmendra’s death on November 24 had indeed left the nation in a profound state of sorrow.
