Ashes: Bazball yielded a culture that lacks accountability, says McGrath

Glenn McGrath, the former Australian pace legend, slammed England’s current Ashes side for lacking “accountability” and described the side as “embarrassing” after a pair of defeats that left them trailing 0‑2 in the five‑match series. He noted that the visitors were easily outplayed in the day‑night pink‑ball Test in Brisbane, a result that followed their loss of the first match in Perth, where Thomas Head’s big century turned the tables and England’s batting collapsed.

In a column for BBC Sport, McGrath made clear that England’s hopes of a 15‑year drought ending look slim—he said they were “not in Australia’s wildest dreams” of being 2‑0 up after only six days of cricket. He praised the fearless attitude the English bring to the game, saying it pushes them beyond what’s possible, but he warned that the culture is shaky. After coaches Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes publicly admitted problems, McGrath believes there may be adjustments behind the scenes. He added that the “message of this is the way we play” has created a culture that “lacks accountability.”

McGrath asked whether we will see a new incarnation of Bazball. He said he likes the idea of playing without fear, but adding pressure and accountability could keep the team on the right track.

He also lauded Australia for its strong all‑round performance, especially Mitchell Starc, who has taken 18 wickets despite the absence of regular leader Pat Cummins and fellow pacer Josh Hazlewood. Starc is also contributing with the bat, and his work is supported by Michael Neser, Scott Boland and Brendan D’Aguilar. Alex Carey delivered what McGrath described as a “masterclass” of wicket‑keeping—perhaps the best he’s ever seen—and a shift in the batting order appears to be Australia’s biggest revelation.
