Arunachal: House masters, hostel superintendent held in Sainik School cadet’s ‘suicide’ case

A Sainik School in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district has been rocked by a tragic incident that has sparked outrage across the state.
Three teachers were taken into custody last Saturday after police finished a thorough investigation into the death of a 12‑year‑old cadet who allegedly committed suicide on the school campus on November 1. The arrest was made after police collected witness statements, ran forensic tests, and studied the timeline of events.
The police filed a case under several sections of the Indian Penal Code—now in the Ruksin Police Station. The investigation is still open.
The staff members held are:
- Devendra Singh (42), House Master for the Junior Cadet Wing
- Kangge Darin (31), House Master for the Senior Cadet Wing
- Amar Singh Thakur (51), Hostel Superintendent
Singh comes from Uttar Pradesh, Thakur from Himachal Pradesh, and Darin is a local of East Siang.
The boy’s death followed a text message he sent to his sister that said he was “tortured by seniors.” Family members say he endured severe ragging and mental harassment in the hostel. The police had earlier taken eight student juveniles into custody and presented them to a Juvenile Justice Board. Although the case was first filed as an unnatural death, early clues point to possible blame from both students and staff.
Arunachal’s Education Minister, Pasang Dorjee Sona, visited the school to meet with police and school officials. He urged full cooperation with the investigation and immediate counseling for students affected. The minister also demanded strict measures to eliminate any physical or mental bullying on campus.
On his official X account, Sona said that the tragic loss of cadet “Tadu Haro” had shaken everyone and that he had reviewed the progress of investigations into this and other recent incidents, including those at Sanggo Residential English School in Mebo.
The case is under police scrutiny, and authorities are working to uncover the full truth behind the boy’s death and the alleged bullying at the school.
