In Shajapur, Madhya Pradesh, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is giving low‑income families a chance to move from slums and mud houses to permanent, safe homes. The scheme, launched on April 1 2016, is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mission to provide housing for all.
PMAY supplies cash help so that families can build or repair “pucca” houses with basic amenities. Thousands of Shajapur residents now talk about how the program has not only given them concrete homes but also brought new hope and confidence into their lives. Many villagers want the government to keep the initiative running for years, so that more families can benefit.
The national program works with the Ministry of Rural Development and the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs. It targets every household that lives in a kutcha or dilapidated dwelling. Beneficiaries are selected through the Socio‑Economic and Caste Census (SECC) and confirmed by local Gram Sabhas.
For the period 2024‑25, PMAY‑G has gotten cabinet approval to build an additional 2 crore houses nationwide. The ministry has earmarked 84,37,139 houses for 2024‑25 across 18 states, including Madhya Pradesh. Between December 2024 and January 2025, nine states aim to construct 46,56,765 houses. By Feb 2 2025, the government had already sanctioned 39,82,764 houses.
PMAY has become a vital part of India’s “Housing for All” goal, shrinking the rural housing shortage and giving families a dignified place to live. Its success in Shajapur showcases how a national scheme can transform lives at the village level.
