South Korea’s senior official reaffirms no unification by absorption or hostile acts toward North Korea

Seoul, Nov 10 – South Korea says it will not push for unification by force and will stay away from hostile actions against North Korea.

Vice Minister for Unification Kim Nam‑jung told residents near the Korean Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) at Camp Greaves in Paju that the Lee Jae Myung government wants a peaceful peninsula. “We will respect North Korea’s system and never try to absorb it or use conflict,” he said.

Kim added that relations had worsened under the previous Yoon Suk Yeol administration. He cited anti‑North leaflets on the border and balloons filled with trash that North Korea launched as retaliation, which damaged border communities.

He urged both sides to return to dialogue, stressing that peace is the only way to ease the suffering caused by the division. “Now is a crucial time for open talks,” he said.

On the sidelines, Second Vice Foreign Minister Kim Ji‑na said South Korea is ready to review sanctions against North Korea if needed. She spoke after Washington announced new sanctions targeting North Korean cyber‑criminals. Kim highlighted the link between North Korea’s online thefts, especially in cryptocurrency, and the funding of its nuclear and missile programs.

Kim noted that the U.S. is still coordinating a joint statement about the recent summit between President Lee and U.S. President Donald Trump. “We’re waiting for the U.S. to finish adjusting the wording,” she said.

The government’s stance signals a shift toward a diplomatic approach to inter‑Korean relations while still keeping a firm eye on security concerns in the digital age.
