In early Friday morning, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) announced that Myanmar had a 4.2‑magnitude earthquake. The quake struck at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometres, around 05:53 IST. The tremor was centred near latitude 18.49 N and longitude 93.80 E, close to the centre of the country.
Earlier in the month Myanmar has been experiencing regular seismic activity. On October 6, a 3.6‑magnitude quake hit at 73 km depth (lat 26.68 N, long 95.92 E). A day before that, on October 5, a 3.7‑magnitude shock occurred at 88 km depth (lat 23.69 N, long 94.12 E). The first week of October also saw a 3.3‑magnitude quake on October 3, which was felt at 90 km depth (lat 24.70 N, long 94.89 E).
The NCS posts real‑time updates on X (formerly Twitter), so residents can quickly see new information. Myanmar sits on a tectonic boundary that makes earthquakes quite common, but the recent tremors have been relatively moderate and have not sparked widespread damage.
Local authorities advise people to stay alert and check their homes for cracks or structural damage after each quake. While the 4.2‑magnitude shock was the strongest this month, it was shallow enough to be felt across a wide area, but it did not trigger any tsunami warnings or extensive ground rupture.
The NCS continues to monitor the region closely. Take a moment to review the latest alerts on the National Centre for Seismology website or their X feed if you’re in or near Myanmar and want up‑to‑date information about ground movement.
