MP: Congress accuses MP CM of ‘shielding’ BJP leader connected with Machhli family

In a major political controversy in Madhya Pradesh, Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar has accused the state government of shielding BJP leaders linked to the notorious Machhli family. Singhar claims that the government is turning a blind eye to these connections, even as police crack down on the family’s illegal activities.

During a press conference, Singhar shared photographs showing the state’s Sports Minister Vishwas Sarang with Sharik Machhli, the main accused in a high-profile drug trafficking and money laundering case. Although he didn’t name him directly, Singhar pointed out the signs of a possible link.

“The drug nexus was uncovered months ago, and every time, we see connections to senior BJP leaders. But instead of taking action, the government stays silent,” Singhar said. He questioned, “Who is stopping the Chief Minister from acting against these BJP leaders?”

The Congress has shared multiple videos and images showing Vishwas Sarang riding luxury bikes and sitting with Sharik Machhli. Some photos even show Sarang spending time with the Machhli family on different occasions. Singhar asked, “Does this mean the BJP is protecting mafia and drug traffickers? Are they shielding those pushing our youth into drug addiction?”

Recently, authorities have taken strong action against the Machhli family. Over the past few weeks, nearly a dozen family members have been booked on various charges, and several arrests have already been made. The Bhopal Crime Branch is leading the ongoing investigation.

In August, authorities demolished a luxury bungalow belonging to the Machhli family, citing illegal construction on government land. Besides this, multiple properties linked to the family have been seized. The crackdown intensified after Shahwar Machhli and his nephew Yasin Machhli were arrested in July. They are accused of playing key roles in a drug syndicate operating across Madhya Pradesh.

Historically, the Machhli family has cultivated ties with politicians and influential figures, allegedly protecting their illegal businesses like drug trafficking, illegal mining, land grabbing, and even arms smuggling since the late 1990s. They also diversified into fish farming and other activities.

Recently, allegations grew when NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo claimed a man claiming to be a Machhli family associate approached him in Delhi. The man was later arrested by police. Kanoongo’s investigations are based on a complaint accusing the family of involvement in drugs, money laundering, and coercive religious conversions.

Efforts are also ongoing to recover encroached land and properties worth crores belonging to the Machhli family. Several hundred acres of land in Bhopal linked to them have been reclaimed, and property seizures continue as investigations go on.

This growing case highlights serious concerns about organized crime, political connections, and law enforcement actions in Madhya Pradesh. The investigation remains active as authorities work to bring the truth to light.
