Nagaland, Mizoram rename Raj Bhavan as Lok Bhavan

Aizawl/Kohima, Dec 2 (LatestNewsX) – From Tuesday onward, the governor’s official residences in Mizoram and Nagaland will be known as “Lok Bhavan,” following a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs. In Assam and Tripura, the change took effect on Monday, and the governor in Arunachal Pradesh will see the name updated soon after Lt. Gen. K.T. Parnaik (Retd.) returns from his trip. The other northeastern states are still awaiting the update. In Mizoram, the Governor’s Secretariat confirmed that the former “Raj Bhavan” now operates as “Lok Bhavan, Mizoram,” a shift announced earlier this week in response to the ministry’s November 25 communication and the governor’s instructions. Tripura’s governor, Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, explained that renaming the residence reflects the nation’s democratic values, moving away from a monarchical impression. Accordingly, all official documents, letterheads, signage, and online presence for the Agartala residence will use “Lok Bhavan.” The historic Pushpabanta (also spelled Pushpavanta) Palace—once the governor’s home—was built by King Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya Debbarma Bahadur in 1917. After shifting to a new complex in 2018, the state government signed a lease that year to transform this 108‑year‑old landmark into a five‑star hotel, prompting protests from groups including the Tipra Motha Party, the BJP ally.
