The Hornbill Festival’s eighth day of its 26th run at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama was a colorful showcase of Nagaland’s tribal cultures.
True to tradition, the day was presented by Rural Development Minister Metsubo Jamir, with co‑host Advisor for Tribal Affairs and Election H. Tovihoto Ayemi. A wide array of cultural acts spotlighted the state’s diverse tribal heritage.
The lineup featured folk dances, songs, traditional games and ritual performances. With more than 86 % of Nagaland’s two‑million residents belonging to tribal groups (2011 census), the 17 principal tribes and their many sub‑tribes offer a wealth of customs, music, costumes and celebrations.
On that Monday, the Lotha group performed Chumpo Shar, a dance celebrating the opening of a new Morung. The Chakhesang troupe showcased Pheta, a harvest‑season dance that embodies courage and festivity. The Konyak team sang Ya‑ai Boa, a love ballad depicting youthful gatherings and the passage into adulthood. The Yimkhiung cultural ensemble illustrated the sang lolong pe (Traditional Go‑Cart), a pastime that brings children and youths together, nurturing camaraderie and both physical and mental wellness.
The Kuki performers staged Vakol Lam, inspired by the synchronized flight of the Vakol bird. Other groups from Zeliang, Garo, Chang, Kachari, Angami, Ao, Tikhir, Sumi, Pochury, Sangtam and Phom communities also delivered their own traditional displays.
The festivities drew lively applause from visitors and participants alike. Notable attendees included Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Minister of State for Communication and Rural Development, and Special Guest Chanchal Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of DoNER.
The Hornbill Festival remains an annual event that travels across various districts of Nagaland. The 10‑day 26th edition, running from December 1‑10 at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama near Kohima, counts six partner countries—Austria, France, Ireland, Malta, Switzerland and the United Kingdom—alongside state partner Arunachal Pradesh, underscoring regional cooperation.
