Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has criticized the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for its flawed and corrupt education system. She promised to take immediate steps to improve the quality of government schools in the city.
During a teachers’ celebration event with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, CM Gupta pointed out that the former government spent millions on self-promotion, but students did not benefit from their education model. She highlighted that no new school buildings were constructed, and many schools still operate from portacabins due to a shortage of teachers and principals.
Rekha Gupta proudly shared that she herself studied in a government school. She believes that government schools are vital in shaping the future of India and are led by dedicated teachers who play a key role in nurturing students.
Addressing teachers at the ‘Teacher Maha Kumbh – State Teacher Honour Ceremony’ on Teachers’ Day at Thyagaraj Stadium, CM Gupta expressed her goal to make government schools as popular as private schools. She said she wants Delhi’s government schools to be better than any in the country. Her plan includes providing modern facilities such as smart classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and playgrounds for over 70,000 teachers and more than 18 lakh students.
“I want government schools in Delhi to be the top choice for parents and students,” she added. She emphasized that teachers’ pride is linked to national pride and that every teacher has the power to instill a sense of patriotism in their students.
While acknowledging that government teachers face challenges like limited facilities, CM Gupta said their job is tougher than those in private schools. She urged teachers to see their work as more than just a job — it’s a contribution to nation-building.
Later, CM Gupta shared on X (formerly Twitter) about the event, praising the performances of students and honoring teachers. She highlighted that teachers play a vital role in shaping generations who bring pride to India and help the nation shine globally.
This step reflects Delhi’s new focus on transforming public education, making government schools more attractive and providing quality education for all children.
