Nepalese workers in Himachal hope for corruption-free government back home, appeal for peaceful protests

Nepalese Workers in Shimla Voice Worries Over Nepal Protests and Corruption

Nepalese migrants working in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, form the backbone of the region’s construction, apple orchards, and small trades. These workers, who leave their homes for better jobs in India, shared their deep concerns about the ongoing unrest in Nepal with . They dream of a corruption-free government back home that creates jobs and reduces the need for migration.

In heartfelt talks, these laborers from remote areas like Jumla and Surkhet expressed frustration over years of corruption and stalled development in Nepal. They urged young protesters not to destroy public property, calling it a national asset that belongs to everyone.

Gurkha Sikarmi, who hails from Jumla and has worked in Shimla for over 10 years, says he isn’t scared of the protests. "This is the people’s fight, driven by students. Our leaders always care for themselves, not us. Prime ministers change fast, but nothing develops," he told . Sikarmi travels back and forth between Nepal and India for work, staying a few months at home each time. "In our villages, no roads, no progress. Leaders get corrupt with power. We just want a government that serves people, not itself."

Bir Bahadur Thakur, another Jumla native selling shilajit and rudraksha malas in India, blames corruption for Nepal’s woes. "All leaders looted the country; no work got done. People finally spoke up. Even Facebook and YouTube got blocked, and leaders like KP Oli hid away," Thakur said. He highlighted massive unemployment in Nepal—no factories or companies push workers abroad. "That’s why we come to India. We want an honest government. Burning public buildings in Kathmandu was wrong; those are our nation’s assets, and it hurts us."

These Nepalese workers in India see their homeland’s turmoil as a call for change. They rely on jobs in Himachal Pradesh’s apple farms and construction sites as a lifeline. Yet, their biggest hope is stability in Nepal.

Thakur added, "People wait for good leaders like Ginrendra or Balen. The struggle is right, but vandalism isn’t. Nepal must rise again."

Nirmal Sikarmi, from Kanika village in Jumla, trades shilajit between Nepal and India. He pointed to internet shutdowns and police crackdowns worsening the protests. "The government cut off the internet. Police beat students on the home minister’s orders. Corruption is everywhere—my village still has no electricity, just dirt roads, and zero jobs," Nirmal shared. He criticized leaders like Sher Bahadur Deuba, KP Oli, and Prachanda for ruining Nepal.

"But torching places like Singha Durbar was a mistake—that’s public property," he said. Nirmal wants real change: education for kids and development so families don’t migrate. He’s heading home for Dashain festival with hope. "The army now says it serves people, not leaders. Let them run things for six months until a good government forms."

Youbak Chalaune from Surkhet district echoed these sentiments. He watched the destruction online and called it unfortunate. "Protests have valid reasons, but burning public assets shouldn’t happen. A new government must step in fast to stop more damage," Chalaune told . He hopes for figures like former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to lead.

Around 40-45 lakh Nepalese work in India, fleeing unemployment and poor health facilities at home. "We want a government that builds jobs, improves healthcare, and ends corruption. We don’t want to leave Nepal for work, but India gives us opportunities until then," Chalaune said.

These Shimla-based Nepalese migrants hold strong faith in Nepal’s future. With honest leadership, peace, and real development, they believe their country can thrive again.
