In New Delhi on Thursday, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar took the floor to clear up rumors that the Karnataka government wants to “control” the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He said the state never said it would curb the RSS. Instead, the rule is simple: anyone who wants to hold a public event needs a permit, and that rule applies to all groups.
Shivakumar explained that the government’s insistence on permits traces back to a directive from former BJP Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar’s administration. The law says that a public programme must get permission first, not that it bans a specific organization.
When reporters asked if the government had been hurt by a recent High Court ruling that threw out an appeal against its stay order, Shivakumar was calm. “There is no setback,” he said. “We will discuss the issue with our legal team.” He added that he respects the judiciary’s decisions.
The party also touched on the controversial Mekedatu dam project. Shivakumar said a special bench will review the case, and when the date is set, the state will be ready to support it.
Voter fraud became a major topic in the interview. Shivakumar promised strict action against any party officials who fail to mobilize the Congress signature campaign – a key effort that has already gathered between 7 and 8 million signatures across Karnataka. He said he would meet with block presidents and the Chief Minister to enforce the rules, and that the AICC has told leaders to suspend those who slack off on the campaign.
“The public must see these irregularities ourselves,” Shivakumar said regarding alleged election tampering in Haryana. He emphasized that the Election Commission has not yet addressed the matter, but the government is keeping the public informed so that voters can make the right decisions.
The Deputy Chief Minister concluded by reminding everyone of the party’s recent loss in the Bengaluru South seat, said that Rahul Gandhi is also presenting evidence of irregularities, and urged Congress members to step up their campaign work.
