Maharashtra government assures fairness for OBC and Maratha communities amidst ongoing reservation debates
In a recent statement, Maharashtra’s Revenue Minister and chair of the cabinet sub-committee on OBC reservation, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, emphasized that the government’s new resolution aims to ensure justice for both the OBC and Maratha communities. Speaking to the media in Mumbai, he explained that the government plans to implement the Hyderabad Gazette order carefully, so no community is left behind or disadvantaged.
Bawankule reassured that those from the Kunbi community, whose records had previously been overlooked, will now receive certificates after proper verification. “The government resolution is clear. There’s no need for anyone to be confused or scared. We are committed to the prosperity of both OBC and Maratha communities,” he said.
He also highlighted that the government is working on two parallel paths—one for Maratha reservation and one for OBC concerns—to ensure fairness. “We won’t take anything away from anyone’s rights. Both communities will get justice and development opportunities,” Bawankule added.
This clarification comes amid protests and concern from some OBC leaders, like NCP’s Chhagan Bhujbal, who believe the new move might reduce OBC shares by giving Marathas Kunbi status and access to quotas. Bhujbal and other organizations have organized demonstrations, marches, and even fasting to oppose the government’s resolution. They are also planning to seek legal advice and may challenge the decision in court if needed.
Bawankule dismissed these fears, asserting that the government is committed to justice for all. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given constitutional backing to the OBC commission at the Centre, and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis started the OBC ministry in Maharashtra. Our sub-committee will protect OBC interests while respecting the rights of the Maratha community,” he said.
Earlier, Bhujbal had boycotted a cabinet meeting to express his discontent with the resolution. He mentioned that activists and leaders are protesting across the state, demanding clarity and justice. Bhujbal also said he and other leaders are consulting legal experts to assess possible legal steps and ensure their concerns are addressed properly.
Bawankule also criticized Congress leaders for raising controversial issues during recent elections. He pointed out his own electoral victories, stating, “In four elections, I won by large margins, and Congress leaders are trying to create trouble just to stop their workers from joining the grand alliance. Their allegations don’t make sense.”
On another note, Bawankule responded to Shiv Sena UBT MP Sanjay Raut’s claim that Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde provided support for the Maratha protests led by Manoj Jarange-Patil. “Eknath Shinde is a respected leader who has served as Chief Minister. He supports the government and stands firmly behind Devendra Fadnavis. Raut should not try to create division or interfere in Maharashtra’s politics,” he stated.
As the debate over reservation policies continues, the Maharashtra government emphasizes its goal to ensure justice, transparency, and progress for all communities.
