On Saturday afternoon a United airliner bound for Tokyo had to turn back to Dulles International Airport after one of its engines failed just after it left the ground, the FAA said. The aircraft landed almost immediately, and the airline confirmed that a single engine lost power. No injuries were reported among the 275 passengers and 15 crew members on board. Photos and videos shared on X showed smoke drifting up near the runway, roughly 25 miles from Washington, D.C., the capital’s closest international airport. The flight involved a 777‑200, and the FAA announced it will conduct a full investigation. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy posted on X that a section of the engine cover detached and sparked a small fire on the tarmac, which was later extinguished by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. United plans to reschedule the flight for later that same day on another aircraft.
