PM Modi Heads to Uttarakhand to Tackle Monsoon Devastation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Uttarakhand on Thursday to check the massive damage from the heavy monsoon rains that have hit every corner of the state. This trip comes as the region battles floods, landslides, and cloudbursts that have caused widespread chaos.
PM Modi will land in Dehradun in the evening. At around 4:15 p.m., he’ll take an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas to get a firsthand look at the destruction. Then, at 5 p.m., he’ll lead a key meeting with state and central officials to review relief and rehab work. Security teams have already ramped up arrangements for a smooth visit.
Uttarakhand’s monsoon woes started months ago, with intense rains in August and September triggering deadly disasters. These events have killed over 80 people so far, left nearly 100 missing, and injured thousands. The damage to roads, schools, power lines, and other infrastructure is huge, with losses topping Rs 5,000 crore. A central team visited earlier to assess the situation and plan aid.
This isn’t Modi’s first disaster visit this week. On Tuesday, he went to Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to inspect flood-damaged spots and push rescue efforts there too.
Modi’s Varanasi Stop for India-Mauritius Ties
Before heading to Uttarakhand, PM Modi will wrap up a high-profile meeting in Varanasi with Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. The leaders are meeting around 11:30 a.m. in the historic city, which is buzzing with decorations and special setups.
Varanasi’s ancient vibes will spotlight the deep cultural and spiritual bonds between India and Mauritius. The talks will cover everything from development partnerships to new collaborations in healthcare, education, science and technology, energy, and infrastructure. They’ll zoom in on renewable energy, digital public services, and the blue economy.
This builds on Modi’s March visit to Mauritius, where both nations upgraded their relationship to an ‘Enhanced Strategic Partnership’. Ramgoolam’s state visit to India runs from September 9 to 16, strengthening these long-standing people-to-people links.
