Rahul Gandhi’s Flood Visit in Punjab Hits Security Snag

In Dinanagar, Punjab, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi faced a major hurdle on Monday when security restrictions stopped him from meeting flood victims across the river in Gurdaspur. Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring didn’t hold back his anger, slamming the situation as a sign of poor safety in India.

Speaking to reporters, Warring questioned the security setup sharply. "Rahul Gandhi ji just wants to talk to the affected families living across the river. But security says there’s a threat and won’t let him go. If Rahul Gandhi faces a danger from Pakistan right here in India, and we’re not safe in our own country, then where are we safe?" he asked, highlighting the frustration over the blocked visit.

Despite the restrictions, Rahul Gandhi, who serves as the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, managed to connect with some flood-affected families in Punjab’s hardest-hit areas. He also met farmers who lost everything to the raging floods in Gurdaspur. Earlier, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Congress party shared that Gandhi checked on relief efforts and stood in solidarity with the victims.

The party’s message painted a grim picture: "The devastating floods in Punjab have ruined thousands of lives. Heavy losses in lives and property have forced people into relief camps. The situation is dire, but every Congress worker stands with Punjab. We urge everyone to help flood-affected families and unite to beat this disaster."

These floods have been brutal across Punjab, wiping out vast farmlands and homes. The latest flood report shows 1,98,525 hectares of crops damaged, with Gurdaspur taking the biggest hit at 40,169 hectares. Other badly affected districts include Patiala (17,690 hectares), Tarn Taran (12,828 hectares), Fazilka (25,182 hectares), Ferozepur (17,257 hectares), and Kapurthala (17,574 hectares).

Tragically, Punjab Revenue Minister Hardeep Singh confirmed the death toll from the floods has climbed to 56 statewide. As relief work continues, leaders like Rahul Gandhi are pushing for more support to help Punjab recover from this massive natural disaster.
