External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar shared his heartbreak on Saturday over a deadly stampede at a public rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, led by TVK chief and actor Vijay. The incident turned a massive gathering into chaos, claiming at least 31 lives and injuring 58 others.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Jaishankar wrote: “Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in a stampede in Karur, Tamil Nadu. My deepest condolences are with the families of the deceased. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.” He’s currently in New York attending the United Nations General Assembly debate and is set to speak at the session today.
State officials say the stampede happened during the evening rally when an excited crowd surged toward the stage. Overcrowding at the venue sparked panic, with several people fainting and needing urgent medical help. The injured rushed to local hospitals, where some remain in critical condition.
DMK leader and former Tamil Nadu minister Senthil Balaji visited the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur on Chief Minister MK Stalin’s orders. Balaji told reporters that 31 people have died so far, with 58 admitted for treatment—46 at private hospitals and 12 at the government one. “The CM immediately checked in after the stampede and sent the district collector, SP, and me to the hospital. We called in extra doctors to ensure proper care,” he said.
Balaji added that private hospitals won’t charge the victims and must provide all necessary treatment. Chief Minister Stalin plans to visit Karur on Sunday to meet the affected families and check on the situation firsthand.
