Lionel Messi re-signs with Inter Miami as team eyes MLS Cup

Lionel Messi has signed a new multi‑year deal, keeping the Argentina superstar at Inter Miami through the 2028 MLS season. The 38‑year‑old will likely finish his career with the South Florida club.
Earlier this year, reports surfaced that the club and Messi had been working on a renewal. The club celebrated the extension with a video of Messi signing at the site that will become their future home, Miami Freedom Park.
Messi told NBC’s “Nightly News with Tom Llamas” that re‑signing was straightforward. “I decide based on how I feel each day, both physically and mentally,” he said. “I’m happy living in Miami, my family is too, so the decision was easy.”
Messi’s arrival in MLS in 2023 was a headline‑grabber and jumped the league into the spotlight. The move helped Inter Miami win the 2023 Leagues Cup and the team earned the MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2024, finishing first in the regular season. With 71 goals and 37 assists in 82 MLS appearances, Messi remains a key performer.
Co‑owner David Beckham praised the partnership: “We brought the best player the game has seen to Miami. Leo shows the same commitment to the city, the club and to winning.” The club believes Messi’s presence continues to draw sold‑out crowds, from the Inter Miami home stadium in Fort Lauderdale to venues across the league.
Inter Miami is set to add more trophies next season, aiming for a run in the MLS Cup playoffs when they face Nashville SC. With Messi back in the squad, fans can expect an exciting 2025 campaign.
