US can send Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine without depleting stockpiles, War Department finds

The Pentagon has cleared the way for the United States to send long‑range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, giving President Trump the final decision on whether Kyiv will receive the weapons. The approval came after an assessment that the transfer would not dent American stockpiles, officials told CNN.

Trump had earlier said he would hesitate to give away “things we need to protect our country.” The Pentagon’s evaluation appears to remove that pause, allowing the missiles to move forward.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been asking Trump for Tomahawks since the Biden era, arguing that the 1,500‑mile range missiles could strike deep inside Russia and curb Vladimir Putin’s war effort. These missiles could hit critical military, logistical, and energy targets far from the front lines, making it harder for Russia to continue the march.

The Trump‑Zelensky meeting last month focused heavily on the Tomahawks. Trump raised concerns about depleting American defenses, and the U.S. has more than 1,000 Tomahawk cruise missiles in its arsenal. Experts at the Center for Strategic and International Studies say Washington might sell no more than 50 to Ukraine, but the Pentagon’s current assessment says the supply line can handle a larger shipment.

Earlier this summer, the Pentagon paused missile deliveries to Ukraine over worries that U.S. stockpiles were shrinking. Trump’s decision not to send the weapons last month came on the back of a phone call with Putin, during which Moscow warned the U.S. against allowing Ukraine to fire long‑range missiles over its borders.

The Pentagon and White House have not yet commented on the latest decision. Meanwhile, Russia continues its daily bombardments of Ukrainian cities, striking locations like Vyshneve with drones and missiles.

Ukraine has turned to alternative methods to gauge hopes for the Tomahawks. A Ukrainian influencer livestreamed a tarot reading asking if the U.S. would ever provide the missiles, reflecting the uncertainty and urgency felt by many Ukrainians.

With the Pentagon’s green light, the next step may be President Trump’s final approval, potentially giving Kyiv a powerful new tool in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
