Top Zohran Mamdani fundraiser celebrated anti-NYPD slurs, said US should be ‘punished for its sins’
According to the NYPost, a key fundraiser and member of Zohran Mamdani’s mayor‑transition team once cheered on hostile chants directed at the NYPD and argued that the United States should be “punished for its sins.”
The individual, Jack Gross, a left‑wing activist closely tied to the New York City Democratic Socialists of America, regularly voiced extreme leftist positions online and openly lauded Karl Marx, the 19th‑century revolutionary who co‑founded communism.
In June 2020, Gross posted that he found it “beautiful” when New Yorkers shouted “NYPD suck my d–k,” a vulgar slogan that appeared during the George Floyd protests that summer.
Several months later, before his account went silent, he wrote, “I must admit I do believe America is a wicked nation that must be punished for its sins.”
His past posts also revealed that he encouraged detentions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and praised certain detainees for attempting to escape. Gross even shared an excerpt from a book on “Karl Marx Day” that honored the “Communist Manifesto” co‑author.
These revelations surfaced after Gross, a Canadian, was named to the mayor‑elect’s 20‑member “economic development & workforce development” committee last month.
Gross, who edits the left‑leaning website “Phenomenal World,” acted as an intermediary for Mamdani’s campaign, helping rally more than $21,000 from over 600 individual donors, according to records.
He is not the sole controversial figure in the transition. An ex‑convicted rapper, Mysonne Linen, was recently appointed to the “criminal legal system” committee after his name was initially omitted because of a misspelling by the team.
In the same announcement, the name of Black Nationalist Lumumba Bandele—a member of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement with a history of praising notorious police killers—was mistakenly misspelled when he was named to the “community organizing” committee.
Neither Gross nor the Mamdani campaign has responded to requests for comment.
