Predictive technology crucial for disaster preparedness in NE: Mizoram Guv

New Delhi: Mizoram Governor General Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd) emphasized that the Northeast’s harsh weather patterns—frequent landslides, cloudbursts, long monsoon spells, and high seismic activity—make predictive technology essential.

At the North East Conclave during the GeoSmart World Conference & Expo 2025 in New Delhi, the Governor highlighted how modern tools—remote‑sensing satellites, Doppler radars, hydrological models and IoT sensors—enable the state to predict landslides up to three days ahead, track river stages live, and dispatch timely alerts to residents and security forces.

“Technology is no longer a luxury for the Northeast. It is the foundation of a climate‑resilient future,” he said.

He underscored Mizoram’s strategic position along its borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar, noting that smart connectivity combined with robust border oversight—leveraging drones, sensors, integrated surveillance, and resilient communications—crucial for curbing illicit crossings, improving emergency responses, and aiding troops in challenging landscapes.

The Governor pointed out the state’s rich prospects in agro‑forestry, bamboo production, renewable power, ecotourism, horticulture, and heritage crafts, arguing that technology could spark sustainable prosperity. According to him, precision farming, soil‑health surveys, yield forecasting, and spatial planning can reduce reliance on slash‑and‑burn methods and bolster lasting ecological balance.

He charted a roadmap that calls for a single geospatial system covering the Northeast, a robust domestic drone industry, and extensive training in GIS, remote sensing, AI terrain crunching, UAV handling, and climate simulation.

The former General urged tighter civil‑military ties, more academic and startup participation, and incentives for young people to pursue tech‑focused professions.

In his warm tone, he invited professionals from the country to experience the Northeast, describing it as a place where the air is clean, the skies are clear, and possibilities are limitless.

mizoram and the northeast aren’t merely hills and valleys; they are realms of enormous potential. With insight, care, and tech foresight, we can forge a tomorrow that’s resilient, green, safe, and flourishing for future generations.

He highlighted that over the past decade‑plus, remarkable strides have been made to close infrastructure gaps and weave the Northeast more tightly into India’s growth story. He illustrated progress by recounting the 2015 railway project that extended trains into Aizawl, showcasing the challenging topography and the resolve behind change.

“This kind of engineering achievement was unheard of earlier, and it reflects the commitment to ensure our northeast never remains what it used to be,” he said.

The former General stressed Mizoram’s distinct role in India, highlighting its vast biodiversity, cultural heritage, and strategic value while acknowledging its fragile landscapes, quake risk, and scattered communities. He argued that these very difficulties make it essential to weave advanced geospatial and digital tools throughout every planning phase.

He portrayed geospatial intelligence as a multiplier for progress, indicating how terrain‑aware leadership, satellite imaging, virtual twins, and GIS modeling can direct road design, service provision, ecological safeguards, and disaster readiness. In a state where villages line narrow ridges and ecosystems are fragile, these tools become indispensable for protecting people and the environment.

The North East Conclave, part of GeoSmart World Conference & Expo 2025, cast a clear focus on the broader Northeast, showing that tech‑driven progress is redefining India’s most biodiverse and strategically vital region.
