“If we want to save India, save the constitution”: CPI leader D Raja

In New Delhi, tensions are rising over India’s fight against Naxalism as top leaders clash on how to handle the long-running insurgency.

Communist Party of India (CPI) General Secretary D. Raja called on the government Monday to accept a key proposal from Naxal groups. Speaking to reporters, Raja slammed the push for a “Naxal Mukt Bharat”—or Naxal-free India—comparing it to earlier BJP slogans like “Congress Mukt Bharat.” He warned that if the BJP and RSS keep holding power, India’s future could turn “imperial.” Raja urged people to oust them to protect the constitution and save the country from what he sees as a dangerous path.

On the other side, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stressed Sunday that ending Naxalism in India goes beyond just military action. He highlighted the need to confront the ideology fueling the “Red Terror” movement. Speaking at the Bharat Manthan 2025 event in New Delhi, themed “Naxal Mukt Bharat: Ending Red Terror Under Modi Leadership,” Shah set a clear goal: a Naxal-free India by March 31, 2026.

Shah explained that many think wiping out armed Naxal activities will solve the problem, but that’s not enough. “We must understand why Naxalism started, grew, and got support in India—who backed it with ideas, legal help, and money,” he said. Until society tackles this root cause, the battle won’t truly end.

He pointed out the government’s balanced approach: Security forces focus on making Naxals surrender or arresting them when possible. Over recent efforts, 290 armed Naxals were killed, 1,090 were arrested, and 881 surrendered. Shah defended the strategy, saying, “We don’t want to kill them—these are our people. But when they take up arms against innocent citizens, we have no choice. Bullets must meet bullets.”

Shah also criticized leftists who defend Naxals, noting the government’s strong surrender policy to give them a way out. This ongoing debate underscores the challenges in India’s push to end Naxalism and build a safer future.
