Karur stampede: DMK MLA Senthil Balaji distributes first instalment of relief cheques to affected families

In Karur, Tamil Nadu, an emergency response began on Wednesday after a tragic stampede at a Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam event on September 27. The crowd disaster killed 41 people and injured more than 100.
DMK MP Senthil Balaji, along with District Collector Thangavel, walked through the affected neighbourhoods and handed out relief cheques to 45 injured families. The first instalment varied between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh, coming from the Chief Minister’s public relief fund. The CM had earlier promised Rs 10 lakhs to the families of those who died and compensation of up to Rs 1 lakh for the wounded.
During the visit, officials from several government departments stopped by to check on the victims’ health, show support, and discuss next steps. Some of the injured are already home after receiving treatment.
The stampede drew national attention. TVK leaders have taken the matter to the Supreme Court, asking for a fresh, impartial investigation. The court agreed to hear the plea, which will be handled by a panel of retired high‑court judges. The petition was filed by TVK chief Vijay under the legal team of prosecutors Dixita Gohil, Pranjal Agarwal and Yash S Vijay, and asks the Madras High Court to set up a Special Investigation Team led by an Inspector General of Police.
These steps aim to ensure transparency in the investigation and to support the families still dealing with the loss and injuries caused by the Karur stampede.
