Udhayanidhi Stalin Honors Periyar on Birth Anniversary, Highlights Social Justice Legacy

In Chennai, Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin marked the birth anniversary of social reformer E.V. Ramasamy, popularly known as Periyar, with heartfelt tributes. He called Periyar the true torchbearer of rationalism and social justice, whose ideas still guide the Dravidian movement today.

Udhayanidhi shared his thoughts on social media platform X, praising Periyar as the "sun of knowledge" who lit up not just Tamil Nadu but the whole world with timeless principles. "Periyar shaped the basics of social justice, self-respect, rationalism, ending caste discrimination, and empowering women," he wrote. "He taught us that real beauty in a person comes from dignity and knowledge, changing how we all live our lives."

The Deputy Chief Minister expressed deep pride in carrying forward Periyar’s legacy. "We’re lucky to inherit the philosophy of Periyar, who strengthened our Dravidian ideology and fueled our dreams for the future," Udhayanidhi added.

Periyar, born on this day, started the Self-Respect Movement in the early 1900s. His bold fights against caste bias, push for women’s rights, and rationalist views built the foundation of Tamil Nadu’s Dravidian politics and culture. Leaders like former Chief Ministers C.N. Annadurai and M. Karunanidhi built their vision of social equality on Periyar’s teachings.

On this special day, Udhayanidhi reaffirmed the DMK party’s dedication to Periyar’s ideals. Under Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin’s leadership, the party vows to keep pushing for social justice. "Let’s commit to walking Periyar’s path of self-respect and rationalism, guided by our leader M.K. Stalin," he urged.

The Dravidian model in Tamil Nadu focuses on inclusivity, welfare, and empowerment—ideas that DMK leaders see as a living tribute to Periyar’s vision. Udhayanidhi’s words show how the party connects today’s governance with Periyar’s enduring fight for equality.
