Arcade Fire’s Win Butler and Régine Chassagne split after 22 years of marriage

After two decades of partnership, longtime Arcade Fire bandmates and spouses Win Butler and Régine Chassagne announced they are separating. The duo posted the news on Thursday in a short statement on the band’s official Instagram account.

They said, “After a long and loving marriage, Win & Régine have decided to separate. They keep loving, admiring and supporting each other while co‑parenting their son.” The message added that their charitable work in Haiti with the KANPE foundation will continue and that the two will remain creative soulmates in just the same way they have been in the band.

Butler (45) and Chassagne (49) married in 2003 and welcomed their son in 2013. The couple has been at the center of Arcade Fire’s most famous albums, including 2011’s Grammy‑winning “The Suburbs.” Their latest record, “Pink Elephant,” dropped in May, sparking the “Don’t Think About Pink Elephant” tour this year.

Despite the split, the band’s lineup is unchanged: Win Butler, Régine Chassagne, Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara will keep touring and recording under the Arcade Fire name.

The couple’s divorce follows a controversial chapter of Butler’s career. In 2022, four people accused him of sexual misconduct. Butler maintained that each relationship was consensual. Three accusers were women describing inappropriate encounters tied to a power dynamic; a fourth, gender‑fluid individual, claimed Butler sexually assaulted them twice in 2015. Chassagne publicly backed Butler, calling him her soulmate and defending his integrity.

Butler’s spokesperson issued a statement saying the interactions were mutual and that he had no intention of harming anyone. He expressed regret toward those who felt hurt.

To date, Arcade Fire has released several albums and toured worldwide, earning a reputation as one of indie rock’s most influential bands. With their new tour coming up, fans can expect the same high‑energy performances and heartfelt songwriting that made the duo famous, even as their personal lives shift.
