Clashes Erupt in London as Anti-Immigration Protesters Face Off Against Counter-Demonstrators
Thousands of people took to the streets of central London on Saturday for a heated demonstration led by anti-immigration and anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson. Waving England and British flags, the crowd gathered to voice strong opinions on immigration, a hot-button issue gripping the UK right now.
The event, organized under the banner of Unite the Kingdom, quickly turned tense as it clashed with a rival group called Stand Up To Racism. According to the Metropolitan Police, protesters from both sides hurled projectiles at each other, sparking chaos that officers had to step in to control. Things escalated when some Unite the Kingdom demonstrators turned their aggression on the police, leading to nine arrests on the spot. Authorities say they’ve identified more people involved in offenses and will track them down for action, even if it takes time.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Met Police shared an update around 4:50 PM: "The turnout for the Unite the Kingdom protest was too big to fit into Whitehall. Protesters left the route onto Victoria Embankment and tried to access Whitehall from multiple directions. When officers moved in to stop them, they faced unacceptable violence—kicks, punches, bottles, flares, and other projectiles. Nine arrests so far, but many more identified. We’ll find them and they’ll face consequences."
Demonstrators proudly carried the Union Jack, the red-and-white St George Cross of England, and even American and Israeli flags. Some sported MAGA hats inspired by former US President Donald Trump. Chants targeted UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and signs reading "Send Them Home" popped up everywhere. Families joined in too, with parents bringing along their kids, as reported by the New York Post.
Immigration tops the list of concerns in Britain these days, pushing aside worries about the struggling economy. The country grapples with a record surge in asylum claims—over 28,000 migrants have crossed the English Channel in small boats just this year. Red and white English flags now dot streets and even roadsides, with supporters hailing it as a burst of national pride. But anti-racism groups view it as a clear signal of hostility toward foreigners.
Police continue to manage the fallout, especially around Whitehall, to ensure a safe exit for the Stand Up To Racism participants. This London protest highlights the deep divides over UK immigration policy, and tensions show no signs of cooling down.
