New Delhi, Dec 7 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced his deep sorrow over the tragic fire that occurred in Goa’s Arpora on Sunday and announced compensation. He said each family of a victim would receive an ex‑gratia of Rs 2 lakh, while those who were injured would be paid Rs 50 000.
The blaze at Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora claimed 25 lives, among them four tourists and 14 employees, and seven victim identities are still pending confirmation. Six people sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical care.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “The fire mishap in Arpora, Goa, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. Spoke to Goa CM Dr Pramod Sawant Ji about the situation. The State Government is providing all possible assistance to those affected.”
The Prime Minister’s Office added that “An ex‑gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF will be given to the next of kin of each deceased in the mishap in Arpora, Goa. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.”
The fire erupted around midnight in the club located on Baga Road, a popular spot near one of Goa’s busiest beaches. Police officials suspect a gas cylinder explosion triggered the inferno.
The sudden blast likely left very little time for those inside – many of them staff members – to escape. Fire trucks from multiple stations rushed to the scene, and firefighters held out until the early morning hours to control the flames. Rescue teams kept working through dawn, sifting through wreckage to find survivors and quell remaining hotspots.
Authorities confirmed that many of the deceased were club employees working on the night of the incident. Senior officials, including the Director General of Police and North Goa district teams, arrived soon after the fire was reported to coordinate rescue and relief efforts.
Investigations are still ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge.
