India’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi just got a major upgrade with a new fitness and warm-up center, plus a sleek nine-lane Mondo track. This boost to the country’s sports infrastructure comes at the perfect time as the stadium gears up to host a global event.
Vishnu Kant Tiwari, Secretary of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), called the project’s completion a huge point of pride. “It’s exciting that we’ve hit our target,” he said, adding his optimism about India’s future in sports. “We’re confident our athletes will bring home plenty of medals for the nation.”
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, checked out the upgrades during a tour on Tuesday. He explored spots like the Accreditation Centre, Medical Centre, warm-up track, and the main Mondo track—which he officially opened on August 29, 2025. These facilities will welcome top para-athletes from more than 100 countries for the upcoming championships.
The stadium now features a world-class Mondo track, a para-friendly gym, and long jump pits, all thanks to upgrades by the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI). Experts say these improvements will give athletes top-notch training spaces as India pushes to shine brighter on the world stage.
Get ready for the New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships, running from September 27 to October 5 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. This marks India’s biggest para-sports event yet, building on the nation’s strong showing with 29 medals at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
Leading the charge for India are 73 para-athletes, including Paralympic gold medalist Sumit Antil. With these fresh facilities, the team aims to make waves in para-athletics and inspire the next generation of competitors.
