Ex-CM Gehlot criticises Bhajan Lal Sharma-led Rajasthan govt over its functioning

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot took fresh aim at the Bhajan Lal Sharma-led government during a media chat at Bhilwara’s Circuit House on September 22. He made it clear he has no personal beef with Sharma or his team, but his heart goes out to everyday folks in Rajasthan struggling under their watch.

Gehlot pointed out that governments usually face public backlash after about three years in power. “But in Rajasthan, protests kicked off right from day one,” he said. “People’s basic needs aren’t getting met, crime rates are climbing, and fear is gripping the state. Yet, leaders aren’t paying attention. This isn’t good for Rajasthan’s future.”

He urged Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma to bring on a sharp advisor to steer better governance. Gehlot claimed the BJP government has battled anti-incumbency sentiments since taking office two years ago, eroding public trust. “Strong leadership helps everyone, but right now, ordinary people’s pain is being brushed aside,” he added.

Gehlot accused the administration of derailing key projects from his Congress era. On electricity woes in Rajasthan, he highlighted how his government offered 100 free units to households. “But this team turned it into a political game, hitting people with unfair bills,” he said. “Folks still fight for new connections, contractors wait on payments, and farmers go without last year’s drought compensation. Livestock lacks feed, leaving farmers in the lurch. It’s time to hold agencies accountable.”

Turning to healthcare, Gehlot praised Rajasthan’s past as a medical role model under the Chiranjeevi scheme. “We provided Rs 25 lakh in insurance coverage, free organ transplants, and real security for the poor,” he noted. “Now, they’ve slashed it to just Rs 5 lakh and misled everyone about the changes.”

He issued a stern warning on delimitation efforts. “Do it fairly at the state and district levels, or the government will pay a heavy price,” Gehlot cautioned. He also slammed the unchecked rise of the gravel mafia, whose terror is spreading across Rajasthan.

On allegations of vote theft, Gehlot called it a major blow to democracy. “The Election Commission faces tough questions, but BJP jumps in with answers. Distrust in EVMs is fueling suspicion nationwide, and that’s why the anti-vote theft movement is picking up steam.”

Finally, he hit out at the BJP’s cow protection stance. “We pioneered grants for cow shelters. Their leaders just put on a show of worship—they don’t truly care. Their politics thrives on Hindu-Muslim divides and empty promises.”
