Ahmedabad – India dominated the West Indies in a thrilling Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium, winning by an innings and 140 runs. The match finished on the morning of day three, giving India a 1‑0 lead in the two‑match series and marking the successful home Test debut of captain Shubman Gill.

India’s record run topped the scoreboard with a 488‑5 declaration after a century each from Dhruv Jurel (125) and Ravindra Jadeja (104 not‑out). Jadeja’s all‑round performance—an unbeaten century and four wickets for 54 runs—anchored the victory. Other key contributors included Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, who set the tone with an incisive new‑ball attack.

The West Indies struggled to gain traction. Over two innings they were bowled out for 162 and 146 in just 45.1 overs, with Alick Athanaze and Justin Greaves making only brief 30‑plus contributions. Their batting collapse speaks to the long‑term challenges the team faces in Test cricket.

India’s bowlers exploited early wickets: Jadeja’s first claim was from a drifting ball that eased into the outside‑edge, followed by a crafty variation that took Brandon King. Siraj then produced a sharp yorker that secured a low‑scoring dismissal of Greaves for 25. Kuldeep Dreamli also closed the session with a leg‑break that caught Roston Chase off the off‑stump.

Athantazes had a few moments against spin, using solid footwork and calculated shots, but his resistance ended after Washington Sundar produced a turn‑laced ball that was caught in the slips. The West Indies’ brief glimmer of resistance came from Johann Layne and Khary Pierre, who hit boundaries in a last‑ditch attempt, but Jadeja’s wicket of Layne and Seales’ easy catch sealed the win.

India will face a rematch in New Delhi on October 10, where the West Indies will look to regroup after a resolute collapse. The match will decide the series and keep India’s bid for the home series victory alive, following a 0‑3 loss to New Zealand last year.

Key match statistics:

– West Indies: 162 (Alick Athanaze 38, Justin Greaves 25) and 146 (45.1 overs).
– India: 488/5 declared (Dhruv Jurel 125, Ravindra Jadeja 104*).
– India’s bowlers: Jadeja 4–54, Siraj 3–31, Bumrah 2–20 (example figures).

India’s strong batting and disciplined bowling set the tone for a command victory, keeping the series edge firmly in their favour.
