Pakistan-Afghanistan relations deteriorate over TTP, Islamabad warns Kabul it will not accept “cross-border attacks”

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan are heating up again, with Islamabad fed up over the Taliban’s refusal to tackle cross-border terror threats. According to reports from Khaama Press, citing Dawn News, Pakistan’s leaders are pushing back hard against attacks from Afghan soil.

Just two days back, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made a strong statement, calling on Kabul to pick a side—either stand with Pakistan or keep supporting the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). He warned that Islamabad won’t put up with these ongoing militant strikes anymore. This comes amid rising security worries in Pakistan, signaling fresh strains in the already rocky ties between the two neighbors.

The drama escalated after Afghanistan accused Pakistan of airstrikes in Nangarhar and Khost provinces that killed civilians. Afghan officials slammed the moves as aggressive provocations. But Pakistan fired back, denying the claims and insisting the strikes hit TTP hideouts. Officials in Islamabad say Afghanistan isn’t doing enough to control these militant groups that endanger the whole region.

Ever since the Taliban took power in 2021, Pakistan has faced a sharp rise in TTP-linked violence. To fight back, Islamabad has ramped up cross-border operations, tightened rules on Afghan trade, and started sending undocumented Afghan nationals home. So far, around 1.2 million Afghan refugees have been deported as part of this tough stance.

Pakistan’s top officials are even talking about deeper airstrikes into Afghanistan if the attacks don’t stop. Experts warn this could spark a bigger clash, pushing the two countries closer to open conflict.

Right now, Pakistan-Afghanistan relations have hit a new low. Trade and talks are still going on the surface, but deep mistrust is clouding any chance of real teamwork. If Kabul doesn’t take solid action on Pakistan’s security fears, things could get even worse, straining these fragile borders further. ()
