Four killed as heavy rains lash north coastal Andhra

Heavy rains and floods triggered by a cyclonic storm that hit Odisha’s coast early Friday have claimed four lives in north coastal Andhra Pradesh. The storm brought chaos to districts like Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, and Parvatipuram Manyam, where two people died in Srikakulam and one each in the other two areas.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu jumped into action, reviewing the flood situation during a video conference with district collectors on Friday. He announced Rs. 4 lakh in compensation for each victim’s family to help them through this tough time.
Officials reported that while the heavy rains have eased, rivers like Nagavali and Vamsadhara are still swelling with massive inflows from upstream areas in Odisha. In Srikakulam, District Collector Swapnil Dinakar shared key details: the Gotta Barrage is handling 1.89 lakh cusecs of water, and the Thotapalli project sees 44,000 cusecs in flood flow. These surges highlight the ongoing flood risks in coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Naidu urged officials to act fast—restoring damaged roads and power lines right away, assessing crop losses from the floods, and providing quick support to affected families. He stressed a humanitarian approach to ease people’s hardships amid the cyclonic storm aftermath.
Adding to the response, Home Minister V. Anitha held her own review meeting with collectors from Srikakulam, Parvatipuram Manyam, and Vizianagaram districts. She ordered round-the-clock control rooms to monitor the Nagavali and Vamsadhara river floods. Anitha directed teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and fire services to ramp up rescue and relief efforts immediately.
To keep everyone safe, she called for warning messages to residents in low-lying areas along the rivers. “If you get an alert from the Disaster Management Authority, head to higher ground without delay,” Anitha advised. No more lives should be lost, and people must avoid facing extra hardships from these floods.
For urgent help during the heavy rains and floods, residents can call the toll-free numbers 112, 1070, or 18004250101. Authorities are working hard to manage the situation and support those hit hardest in north coastal Andhra Pradesh.
