Dhaka, Nov 28 (LatestNewsX) – Reports from local media say that a heated confrontation between Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) workers and members of Jamaat‑e‑Islami left more than 25 people hurt in the Pabna district. The clash reportedly broke out in the afternoon in Char Gargari village of Sahapur Union, as campaigners from both sides sparked a violent exchange.
The police were called to the scene after members of the community alerted them. Officer‑in‑Charge of Ishwardi Police Station, ASM Abdun Nur, confirmed that authorities arrived promptly and tried to restore order.
According to Bangladesh’s Bengali daily Prothom Alo, the incident began when Jamaat candidate Abu Taleb Mondal went to the area for a campaign visit. He was blocked by supporters of the BNP candidate. A quick argument turned physical, and Milad left only to be met with another clash on his return. In that second clash, shots were allegedly fired, and several motorcycles as well as his vehicle were vandalised.
Mondal said that he and his party’s entourage had come to the village as part of a pre‑arranged schedule, riding about 150 motorbikes. He claims that, on the way back, supporters of BNP candidate Habibur Rahman attacked them, opened fire and damaged the motorcycles. According to his statement, roughly 50 of his team were injured, including six who suffered gunshot wounds. Those shot were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, while others received care locally.
BNP candidate Habibur Rahman told Prothom Alo that Jamaat’s female activists had been canvassing door‑to‑door in the village, offering “tickets to heaven” in return for votes. When local BNP leaders pressed back, he asserts that Mondal challenged them with a convoy of armed men. He says that Jamaat supporters then fired shots and assaulted BNP activists, leaving several of them wounded.
Political violence has been intensifying in Bangladesh under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, as the leading opposition parties prepare for the February 2026 election. Those that had earlier sided with Yunus to topple the democratically elected Awami‑League government headed by Sheikh Hasina are now at odds.
