Bangladesh pulled off an exciting comeback to beat Sri Lanka by four wickets in the opening Super 4 match of the Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025 in Dubai on Saturday. After struggling in chases lately—winning just one of their last 14—Bangladesh showed real grit to avenge their earlier league-stage loss to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka posted a tough 168 for 7 in their 20 overs, thanks to Dasun Shanaka’s explosive unbeaten 64 off 38 balls. The former captain smashed six sixes and three fours in a match-turning knock that lifted his team from a shaky spot. Openers Pathum Nissanka (22) and Kusal Mendis (34) started strong with a 44-run stand, but Bangladesh’s bowlers struck back hard. Mustafizur Rahman grabbed 3 wickets for 20 runs, including two in the second-last over, while Mahedi Hasan returned to the side and took 2 for 25. That kept Sri Lanka from pushing past 170, even though they looked set for 190 at one point.

Choosing to bowl first paid off for Bangladesh. They lost Tanzid Hasan for a duck but raced to 59 for 1 in the powerplay—slightly ahead of Sri Lanka’s early effort. Saif Hasan fired up the chase with a quick 61 off 45 balls, including two fours and four sixes. He teamed up with captain Litton Das for a solid 59-run second-wicket partnership, though Das fell for 23 off 16 balls to Wanindu Hasaranga.

Saif kept the momentum going, reaching his half-century off 36 balls, and Towhid Hridoy joined in with a brisk 58 off 37. The duo helped Bangladesh cross 100 runs comfortably. Saif also fell to Hasaranga, but Hridoy stepped up, hitting fifty off 31 balls and guiding the team to 150 while keeping the required rate in check.

The match got tense near the end, with five runs needed off the last over and Bangladesh at 164 for 4. Hridoy missed a full toss and got lbw to Dushmantha Chameera for 58, leaving the chase wobbly. Jaker Ali smashed a four on the first ball, but two quick wickets followed. Nasum Ahmed then scampered a single to finish the job in 19.5 overs, sealing 169 for 6. Hasaranga finished with 2 for 22, and Shanaka chipped in with 2 for 21.

This thrilling T20 Asia Cup 2025 clash highlighted Bangladesh’s bowling depth and batting resilience against a fighting Sri Lanka side.

Brief scores: Sri Lanka 168/7 in 20 overs (Dasun Shanaka 64*; Kusal Mendis 34; Mustafizur Rahman 3-20, Mahedi Hasan 2-25). Bangladesh 169/6 in 19.5 overs (Saif Hasan 61, Towhid Hridoy 58; Wanindu Hasaranga 2-22, Dasun Shanaka 2-21) won by 4 wickets.
