In Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala’s BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar told reporters that the newly filed sexual‑assault complaint against suspended Congress legislator Rahul Mamkootathil was part of a CPI(M)–Congress plan to “cover up” the Sabrimala gold “theft.” He said the case was logged only ten days before the polls, using it as a smokescreen for the alleged gold smuggling scandal, and pointed out that the accusations existed even before the by‑poll.
“Yet the Congress still let him stay with the people of Palakkad,” he added, implying a double standard.
Meanwhile, former BJP state chief K. Surendran demanded that the Congress hand over all complaints lodged against Mamkootathil directly to the police. He questioned why both the KPCC and AICC, despite receiving multiple victim statements, had not passed them on to law enforcement. Even the Youth Congress state secretary had publicly acknowledged the complaints, yet no concrete action followed.
Surendran also criticised opposition leader V. D. Satheesan, accusing him of “failed” to inform the police. “If Congress claims a moral high ground, why isn’t Mamkootathil being forced to step down?” he asked. He highlighted that senior Congress figures such as Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala had publicly distanced themselves from Mamkootathil, yet the party’s leadership still resisted calling for his resignation, calling it a clear double standard.
The former BJP chief alleged that the victims faced massive cyber‑attacks and intimidation, with even Satheesan targeted after calling for action. He described the whole setup as an “organised crime” supported by harmful forces and accused the police of deliberate delays. “Mamkootathil never left Palakkad, yet the police did not arrest him. It seems they are waiting for him to secure anticipatory bail,” he said. He lamented that just 48 hours after the complaint was filed, the state Home Department claimed it could not locate a sitting MLA in Kerala.
On Saturday, fresh reports emerged that Mamkootathil, who filed a plea for anticipatory bail in the Thiruvananthapuram district court, had actually met his lawyer the previous Friday. Despite an ongoing look‑out notice and days of media attention, he evaded detection. The court in the capital will examine his bail plea on Wednesday.
