Sydney, Oct 13 – Australia’s Test captain, Stephen Cummins, says he is still fighting a lumbar back injury and the odds of him playing the Ashes opener in Perth on Nov 21 are “less likely than likely.”
He has just started running again and plans to begin bowling drills next week as he works to be fit for the first ICC World Test Championship match against England.
Cummins missed the last three white‑ball series against New Zealand and India after scans showed bone stress in the lower back. He was also out of the Test tour of the Caribbean, where his bowling workload was kept low to protect the injury.
“I’m running today and then every second day, each run a little longer, and we’ll get into bowling prep next week,” Cummins told reporters at the Kayo Sports Summer of Cricket launch. “I’m probably a couple of weeks away from putting on the spikes and bowling on turf again, but every session feels better.”
He believes the back injury will not be a long‑term problem. Cummins says he has never had that kind of injury in the last seven or eight years and he expects to put in as many Ashes Tests as possible and lead Australia at next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
“Whatever I did at 20 with this injury made me worried about my body, but now I’m confident I can recover properly and play even more cricket than in the last few years,” he said.
