Devotees poured into Harsiddhi Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, early Monday morning to kick off Sharadiya Navratri prayers. This nine-day Hindu festival honors Goddess Durga and her nine powerful forms, drawing crowds across India eager to celebrate divine feminine energy.
As the festivities begin in the lunar month of Ashwin, people from all walks of life head to temples nationwide. In Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, thousands gathered at Devkali Temple for the first day’s rituals. Delhi saw huge crowds at Kalkaji Temple and Jhandewalan Temple, while in Chhatarpur, devotees flocked to Shree Adya Katyayani Shaktipeeth Mandir to seek blessings.
Over in Mumbai, the Mumbadevi Temple lit up with the sacred Kakad Aarti ceremony, signaling the start of the vibrant nine nights. During Sharadiya Navratri, temples like those dedicated to Sri Kanakadurga dress the goddess as Sri Maha Chandika Devi. She represents the Trishakti—combining Mahalakshmi for prosperity, Mahakali for power, and Mahasaraswati for wisdom. Legend says she emerged to defeat evil, protect the good, and grant wishes like knowledge, fame, and wealth. Worshiping her feels like honoring all deities at once, turning foes into allies and fulfilling prayers quickly.
This festival bursts with energy, featuring fasting, devotional songs, and lively dances like Garba and Dandiya. Each day spotlights a unique aspect of Goddess Durga, from strength to compassion, creating a joyful mix of rituals and culture that unites communities.
