Spanish football star Sergio Busquets has shared some big news: he’s hanging up his boots at the end of this MLS season. The 37-year-old midfielder, who’s built an incredible career with Barcelona and the Spain national team, dropped the announcement in a heartfelt video and social media post on Friday.
“Thanks to all and football for so much. You will always be part of this beautiful story. A heartfelt thank you to everyone, and to football, for everything,” Busquets wrote. Right now, he’s teaming up with his old Barcelona buddy Lionel Messi at Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
Busquets comes from a football family—his dad, Carlos Busquets, was a goalkeeper for Barcelona too. Sergio burst onto the scene with Barca’s first team back in 2008 under coach Pep Guardiola. Over the years, he racked up 722 appearances, helping the club snag nine La Liga titles, seven Copas del Rey trophies, and three Champions League wins.
On the international stage, Busquets earned 143 caps for Spain and played a key role in their triumphs at the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship.
As word spread about his Sergio Busquets retirement, tributes poured in from former teammates and rivals. Sergio Ramos, the ex-Real Madrid defender who often faced off against him, called Busquets “the definition of how to be exceptional while remaining an ordinary guy.” He added, “A rival most of the time, a teammate many others, you have always stood out for your class, vision, and quality of football, and for your humble and authentic nature.”
Andres Iniesta, Busquets’ longtime Barcelona and Spain partner, shared, “It was a privilege to share all these years with you. How I’ve enjoyed being by your side! What a great time we had! You are one of the greatest in the history of football, without a doubt. You had a unique way of playing, which will remain forever in our memories. I wish you all the best in what comes next.”
Even Sergi Roberto chimed in simply: “Thank you for everything. You’re the best!”
Fans and football lovers everywhere are reflecting on Busquets’ legacy as one of the game’s smartest midfielders, especially in those epic Barcelona days and Spain’s golden era. What’s next for him after leaving Inter Miami? Stay tuned.
