K’taka: Govt creating controversies over Ganesh festival celebrations, says BJP

BJP Slams Karnataka Congress Government Over Ganesh Festival Controversies

In a sharp attack on the Congress-led government in Karnataka, the state BJP has accused it of stirring up needless controversies around the Ganesh festival celebrations. BJP leaders say the government is more scared of minorities than actually supporting them, leading to restrictions on the festivities.

Speaking to reporters at the BJP state office in Bengaluru on Saturday, Opposition Leader in the Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, didn’t hold back. He claimed the government lacks the guts to control minorities, so it’s blocking Ganesh Utsav events to create drama. "The Congress talks big about backing minorities, but in reality, they’re playing caste politics out of fear," Narayanaswamy said.

He pointed out that Ganeshotsava has always been a peaceful tradition in Karnataka, celebrated without any issues in the past. But now, the Chief Minister is allegedly withdrawing criminal cases against minorities just for votes, trying to paint them as "peace ambassadors." This, he warned, is actually disturbing the state’s harmony.

Narayanaswamy stressed that the Constitution is for everyone, not to favor or insult any group. "The government should unite people and move forward, but this one is anti-Hindutva," he added. He even alleged that officials have issued secret orders to police, banning Ganesh festival events in districts and taluks through sneaky circulars. "Who gives you the right to deny permissions? Are you above the people?" he questioned, calling it suppression of citizens.

The BJP leader also hit out at what he sees as extreme favoritism toward minorities. Take Bengaluru’s famous Shivajinagar area—it’s a household name across India. Now, the government wants to rename the Shivajinagar Metro Station to St. Mary’s Metro Station, claiming Shivaji wasn’t from Karnataka. "Who is St. Mary? Is she from Shivajinagar or even Karnataka?" Narayanaswamy asked, urging the government to focus on what pleases the public instead of misleading them. He called on leaders to stick to the Constitution’s path.

In a somber note, Narayanaswamy expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede during a Ganesh Visarjan procession in Hassan district, which claimed nine lives. He mentioned that senior BJP figures like R. Ashoka and C.T. Ravi have already visited the spot, but he couldn’t due to unavoidable reasons. The controversy highlights growing tensions around Ganesh festival 2023 in Karnataka, with BJP demanding fair play for all communities.
