Sourav Ganguly, the former BCCI president and legendary India player, sent a warm message to Shubman Gill, India’s new ODI captain. In a brief press briefing, Ganguly said Gill is “a good player” and that the Indian team is performing strongly. He added that every player earns a place by doing well, sharing his confidence in Gill’s leadership in the 50‑over format.
Gill’s first assignment as captain will be the three‑match ODI series in Australia that starts on October 19. The tour will also mark the return of key batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who haven’t played for India since the Champions Trophy final in March.
“Gill is ready to lead the team in England,” Ganguly said. “He will keep performing well because the squad is built on talent.” The former BCCI chief praised Gill’s journey, noting the courage he showed in captaining India across formats.
Gill has already taken on the Test captaincy after Rohit stepped down from the red‑ball game. His first Test as captain came in the Anderson‑Tendulkar Trophy, where India secured a 2‑2 draw. When asked about his new responsibilities, Gill said, “It’s a huge honour and a big responsibility. I’m excited to lead my country in this format. I’m looking forward to what the future holds.” He added that he wants to stay in the present, focus on upcoming wins, and not dwell on past achievements.
India’s ODI squad for the Australia tour will include:
– Shubman Gill (captain)
– Rohit Sharma
– Virat Kohli
– Shreyas Iyer (v‑c)
– Axar Patel
– KL Rahul (wk)
– Nitish Kumar Reddy
– Washington Sundar
– Kuldeep Yadav
– Harshit Rana
– Mohammed Siraj
– Arshdeep Singh
– Prasidh Krishna
– Dhruv Jurel (wk)
– Yashasvi Jaiswal
With support from seasoned veterans and fresh talent, India looks to test its strength against Australia while building momentum ahead of major tournaments.
