Steps like GST reforms and citizen-first infrastructure showcase commitment to citizens: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a shoutout to an article by Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, pointing out how key moves like simplifying the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and building citizen-friendly infrastructure reflect smart planning, sharp attention to details, and a real push to deliver benefits to every Indian.

Puri, in his piece shared on social media platform X, highlighted how Modi’s hands-on approach is truly changing things on the ground. “Narendra Modi’s inspirational professionalism and impeccable work ethic are making the difference,” Puri wrote. He described the prime minister’s discipline as the key to turning big ideas into strong, lasting systems that set him apart.

Puri praised Modi’s unique style in action: meetings stay civil yet straightforward, with room for different opinions but no tolerance for slacking off. After listening to everyone, Modi boils down complex files to the core options, hands out clear responsibilities, and sets specific goals to measure success. In his view, the strongest ideas win out—not the noisiest ones—and he rewards solid preparation while keeping a close eye on follow-through.

These qualities shine through in recent GST reforms that aim to make life easier for everyday Indians and businesses alike. The government just streamlined India’s GST structure by ditching the 12% and 28% tax slabs from the old four-tier system (5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%). Now, most goods fall under just two main rates: 5% and 18%. They also added a new 40% rate for luxury items and so-called “sin” goods like tobacco and high-end vices.

The GST Council greenlit these changes in September 2025, and they kicked in on September 22, 2025. The goal? Cut prices on daily essentials for consumers and lighten the load on businesses by simplifying rules, fixing tricky “inverted duty” problems where inputs cost more to tax than outputs, and boosting overall compliance.

For example, items like household electronics, small cars, and auto parts that used to face 12% or 28% taxes now sit comfortably at 18%. Everyday must-haves—think packaged foods, personal care products, and dairy items—have shifted to the lower 5% slab from their previous 12% or 18% rates. These GST simplification steps are already sparking buzz about lower costs and smoother operations across India.
