Former Indian cricketer Nilesh Kulkarni is optimistic about India’s chances in the 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup. He says the team led by Suryakumar Yadav has a solid edge to lift the trophy, but they need to keep up their momentum and meet the high expectations to make it happen.
India kicked off their Asia Cup journey on a high note with a massive nine-wicket victory against the UAE earlier this week. Next up is a high-stakes Group A clash against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. After that, they’ll take on Oman in Abu Dhabi on September 19. To reach the final on September 28 in Dubai, India must navigate the Super Four stage successfully.
“T20 cricket is all about that one day, that one moment—it’s super dynamic, and you can’t afford to make mistakes twice,” Kulkarni told on the sidelines of the PlayCom 2025 summit on Saturday. “India has a great advantage right now, but they must maintain their form and live up to what fans expect from them.”
The former left-arm spinner, who featured in three Tests and 10 ODIs for India, praised the BCCI for building a strong cricket structure. This system has created a deep talent pool for the national teams across formats.
“The real strength of Indian cricket lies in how the BCCI gives every young player a shot—from school tournaments to junior levels, state championships, and then the international stage,” Kulkarni explained. “Add the IPL to the mix, and you’ve got amazing pathways for talents to keep performing. Even after a few setbacks, they get more chances to shine and dream of playing for India.”
Kulkarni wrapped up by highlighting the IPL’s massive role in shaping Indian cricket. “The IPL has been a game-changer, not just for showing off skills but also for giving players financial security and comfort. It lets them focus on giving their best. Kudos to the BCCI for launching the IPL and opening these doors for everyone.”
