In the Kerala Legislative Assembly on Thursday, tensions ran high when the Speaker, A.N. Shamseer, suspended three Congress members – Roji M. John, M. Vincent and Saneesh Kumar – after a heated clash that left the chief marshal injured.
The move came after a protest by opposition lawmakers, who had gathered to voice grievances over Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s remarks and the sale of the Sabarimala gold‑plated Dwarapalaka idol. Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan accused ruling‑party legislators of making unparliamentary comments and alleged that watch‑and‑ward staff had intimidated opposition MPs. He also said that the protest was peaceful and called for the resignation of Minister V.N. Vasavan and the removal of several Devaswom Board members.
The opposition said the protest demanded action against those involved in the idol’s theft and sale. After Satheesan spoke, MPs marched into the hall shouting slogans and waving banners that read, “LDF’s Alchemy Turned Ayyappa’s Gold into Copper.” The Speaker ordered the banners to be seized, but enforcement was only partly successful.
Minister M.B. Rajesh blasted the opposition for “hooliganism.” Amid the uproar, members from both sides exchanged words, and watch‑and‑ward personnel blocked opposition lawmakers from reaching the speaker’s dais. Assembly proceedings were briefly halted. The house later resumed, but the opposition chose to boycott the rest of the session.
The incident follows earlier controversy when the Chief Minister mocked an opposition MLA’s short stature, which many say stoked the current protests both inside and outside the assembly. The suspension of the three Congress MLAs marks the latest flare‑up in a series of confrontations that highlight rising political tensions in the Kerala Legislative Assembly.
