Prime Minister Narendra Modi met a delegation of senior bishops from the Syro‑Malabar Church in New Delhi on Tuesday. The group, led by Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil, included Archbishop Mar Kuriakose Bharanikulangara from Faridabad and several other senior bishops. Modi welcomed the bishops and said, “I am always at your service.”
The meeting was friendly and constructive. Modi listened closely as the bishops raised concerns about the welfare of Christians and other minorities in India. They also discussed how the church can continue to contribute to social and developmental work across the country.
Kerala’s BJP leaders were present, including State President Rajeev Chandrasekhar and party member Shone George. After the talks, Chandrasekhar told reporters that the visit was a courtesy call and a chance for faith leaders to voice wider concerns about micro‑minority rights. He said Modi listened attentively and promised that the government is open to dialogue on all issues.
“BJP values inclusivity and governance beyond religious lines,” Chandrasekhar added. “The rule of law will always come first. We are a party of service for all people.”
The bishops also asked Modi to consider inviting the Pope to India, a request that highlighted the church’s strong ties to Rome. They appreciated his assurances and expressed hope for continued cooperation in education, social welfare, and community engagement.
This meeting comes at a time when the Syro‑Malabar Church is deepening its engagement with national leadership. The dialogue underscores growing cooperation between faith‑based institutions and the government on minority welfare, social harmony, and broader development goals.
