Creation of 5 corporations in Bengaluru to ensure smooth governance: K’taka CM Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru, Oct 10 – Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah opened the first meeting of the newly formed Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) in a clear, forward‑looking address. He explained why the state has split the sprawling city into five separate municipal corporations and how the GBA will steer Bengaluru’s future growth.

The city’s population now tops 14 million, he said, making single‑corporation governance unwieldy. “Forming more than one corporation will ease the challenges of managing a metropolis of this size,” Siddaramaiah told the crowd. He traced the idea back to a committee set up during his first term, which was reconvened after his return to office. That report led to the GBA’s creation and the establishment of five new city bodies.

Key priorities for the GBA were laid out in plain language. The authority must improve solid‑waste management, boost municipal revenues, cut traffic congestion, and make Bengaluru more livable. “Roads, drains, footpaths and parks have to come first,” he said, urging each corporation to become a model civic body.

Siddaramaiah called on all government departments – BWSSB, BDA and BESCOM among them – to work closely with the GBA. “Collaboration is essential if we want to get the job done,” he emphasized. He also spoke about the democratic process, saying that even those who oppose power decentralisation should still participate constructively in the meetings.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar welcomed Siddaramaiah to the GBA chairmanship, noting that “all corporations need more funding and the government must support them.” Shivakumar added that opposition leaders were encouraged to join the council and that any rumors of a boycott were addressed by inviting the opposition leader to attend.

The meeting also covered the region’s electoral roadmap. Siddaramaiah confirmed that reservation decisions are underway, a voter list will soon be finalized, and the data will be submitted to the court by November. “Bengaluru is always on the news, but today we mark a historic step,” Shivakumar added, celebrating the new governance framework that divides the city into five zones.

With the GBA in place, Karnataka’s capital is set to receive coordinated leadership aimed at tackling shared challenges—from traffic jams to waste disposal—and shaping a cleaner, more efficient Bengaluru for its growing residents.
